Why does it feel like nobody knows how to cut curly hair?! I've cringed as stylists reach for the brush and blow dryer and watched as my hair doubled in size. No wonder my curls look like they've gone through the wringer when they are treated like straight hair.
After years of good, bad, and ugly haircuts, I've finally found a gold mine of a stylist who knows just what to do with my curly hair. Rianne at Luminous Beauty Company is the one I can trust with my hair and someone I can consult for all my curly questions. She has extensive education and experience working with textured hair, and not to mention, she's just super cool. I've been going to her for over five years now!
I first met Rianne in 2016 when I worked as a receptionist at the salon she worked for. I watched as she transformed clients day in and day out using Devacurl products and techniques from the DevaCurl Academy in New York. Then I got to experience a curly cut, or Devacut, for myself.
Devacurl has been a leader in the industry for us curly haired folks. They teach that a curly cut should be a dry cut because, think about it, your hair looks a lot different wet than it does dry. If you cut off two inches of wet hair, for example, you might lose four inches of length because of shrinkage! This is why Deva Stylists cut the hair dry, picking out each curl around your head and cutting it where you actually want it to sit.
Devacurl also uses products designed for textured hair that are free from sulfates, silicones, and parabens. Sulfates are detergents that strip the hair of its natural oils, silicones coat the hair follicles and prevent proper moisture penetration, and parabens are a preservative linked to cancer. Basically, sulfates, silicones, and parabens negatively influence the health of you and your hair and are better left outside of your products. If you want to learn more, check out this article.
So, what does a Devacut entail? Rianne first does a dry cut to get the right shape around the head. She gets rid of dead ends, adds layers, and gets the length to where you want it.

After the dry cut:
Then, you get a lovely shampoo, scalp massage, and condition to clean and restore your locks. After that, she will rake styling products through the hair depending on your texture. For me, she uses a cream and plenty of ultra-defining gel. Your hair should be soaking wet before applying the stylers for best results. Rianne rakes and scrunches the products in with her hands and then soaks up the excess moisture with a Devatowel.
One of my favorite things about getting a Devacut is how voluminous my hair looks afterwards. This is largely due to the drying process and placing clips at the roots. Rianne carefully pins up small sections around my scalp with clips like these and lets them dry there. This gives the roots a bit of a lift. I sit under a dryer-head for about 45 minutes and then reveal a crown of shiny, beautiful curls. I love how bouncy and free my hair feels!
I am so thankful to have a stylist I can trust. Use the DevaCurl stylist search to find one near you! It's time to find someone who understands your curly hair. 💖
