What makes someone feel beautiful? Is there a difference between inner beauty and outer beauty? I decided to put these questions to the test. I interviewed 10 friends at my university and asked them one simple question: what is something that makes you feel beautiful on the inside and/or outside? It was interesting to see their thought processes and various answers. Some were concrete actions or activities, and others were intangible ways of being.
First, I want to share my answer to the question. Something that makes me feel beautiful is skincare. If you've been on my blog before, this might not come as too much of a surprise, but I love skin products and self care! It's partly the result that makes me feel beautiful, but it's mostly the process. Feeling the cool water on my skin in the morning, patting in different creams and serums, and trying out new formulas is so wonderful to me. It physically feels soothing and generally helps me feel put together. No matter if I'm spending a lazy day inside or a busy day out and about, skincare is a constant that helps me (quite literally) put my best face forward.

"What makes me feel beautiful on the outside is like when you get all dressed up and look nice, and on the inside when someone just says something nice to you or compliments you and is just being a great friend -- it makes me feel awesome on the inside."

"My first thought was music -- it makes me feel beautiful on the inside when I'm playing and singing and stuff. It just makes me happy!"

"One thing that makes me feel beautiful both inside and out is doing yoga. It helps my mind relax and calm down, but I also am able to get stronger from it. And then it makes me feel beautiful on the outside because I'm working out and doing something for my body as well as my mind."

"I think for me, exercising every day really helps me feel healthy and beautiful, I guess. But then the other thing would definitely be my faith. I have some Jesus jams that really uplift me and make me feel welcome and loved and beautiful."

"Lifting. It makes me feel good."

"When I'm helping people, like, I'm thinking specifically of kids. Cuz that's just a really nice feeling. On the outside, I don't know... I don't usually feel beautiful. I think certain moments I do, but it's usually dependent on the outfit and my acne at the moment."

"Wearing makeup makes me feel beautiful physically because I think when I cover up the blemishes on my face or add to my face with like glitter or eyeshadow it makes me feel more confident because I feel pretty on the outside. But then, to make myself feel pretty on the inside, getting dressed up, wearing nicer clothes, doing my hair, making myself feel pretty on the outside makes me feel good on the inside because I go around my day more confident. And when I make a statement with my outfit, I feel like I make a statement as a person."

"I feel like making time for other people just makes me happy. It makes me feel useful and just like, I don't know, like I'm there for someone. It brings a light into a day where you may be not happy."

"Participating in Totally Tasteful Tuesday. Like wearing dresses and just dressing up for no reason."

"Making other people smile! I don't know, I just think when you make someone else happy and it's like a genuine smile, I think you feel absolutely ecstatic. So, how more beautiful could you feel than when you make someone else happy?"
Wow... something I'm adding to my list of what makes me feel beautiful are THESE PEOPLE! I am moved by their ability to spread beauty and goodness to those around them. When life doesn't feel good, these are the kinds of things that remind you it is.
