I love YouTube. It has simultaneously acted as an entertainment medium, educational resource, and outlet for connection since I was a tween, and I still keep up with my subscriptions today. I specifically flock to beauty channels about hair, skin, and makeup, and I'm so excited to share about some of the creators I've come to know and love. The world of "beauty gurus" and "beauty vloggers" is extensive, but I've narrowed it down to five of my favorite channels.
Rachel is just a joy to watch. She posts a range of videos -- viral beauty hacks, the best of drugstore and high-end makeup, all-day wear tests, and new products launches -- all with a sweet and silly attitude. She posts new videos every Thursday and Sunday and uses a lot of fun editing techniques. She often applies makeup and chats right to the camera, so it feels like she's right along with you. Check out one of her videos below to get a feel for her style.
Penny is my all time favorite YouTuber! She is funny, authentic, genuine, and overall inspirational. She taught me a ton about caring for curly hair, style, and life in general. Another big focus of her channel is learning about safe, quality, and environmentally-friendly ingredients found in beauty products. Because of her, I always check the ingredient list on cosmetics before making a purchase. Here is a video of her updated curly hair routine -- highly recommend.
Who would I be if I failed to mention the beauty queen herself, Michelle Phan?! She was one of the first beauty gurus to ever exist on YouTube, and while she's no longer very active on the site, there is a vault of videos just waiting to be watched. I vividly remember watching Michelle's Barbie makeup tutorial when I was maybe 10 years old and being wowed by her talent. She truly is an artist that captures the transformative element of makeup.
Lisette is a master at curly hair and self care. She has over three million subscribers, which is a testament to her quality content. With videos on makeup tutorials, daily routines, nail care, hair tips, and girl talks, her channel is a fun place to be. While the content will change, her personality and glamourous taste will always shine through.
I'll sum up Matilda's channel in three words: clean, calming, and pretty. She uses a flat lay style of filming on a white background which places the emphasis on the products themselves rather than the application. She describes each skincare, bodycare, and makeup product in depth along with satisfying swatches. Plus, her lovely Australian accent makes it all the more enjoyable.
